Eric Yaeger wondered:

When 56k modems were first on the market, one cheapskate/practical
magazine listed them as the most likely waste-of-money/disappointment
as a Christmas gift that year, based on the then lack of ISP support
and generally unsuitable Plain Old Telephone System.

To ascertain whether a 56k modem would be better than any other you
need to use MSD at the DOS prompt, or something better e.g. The Modem
Doctor, to determine your UART chip -- and hope it's the faster 16550.
Then ask around your locality to see what throughput or data transfer
rate folks using your phone company and ISP are getting. If it's
consistently 4kB/s and above then a 56k modem will be of some benefit
over a 33.6k or lower... as long as it's not a "Winmodem".

Hoping that agrees with the thoughts of others,

Jake

Has anyone tried a parallel port modem? -- or even seen one?
