Of course it is. To run a 56k EXTERNAL modem your computer would have 
to be capable of running a serial port at 115200 baud. That's only
11520 characters a second. My XT could probably manage that.(V20chip)
My 20 Mhz '386 could do two of them at the same time and has.

An INTERNAL modem doesn't have the serial link bottleneck either so
it would be even easier. 

That's just considering the computer and modem with good ASM grade
software. C+++ might be an entirely different matter. <G>
