Responding to Tom Mueller:

>>I used DOSCIM to access Compuserve, also tried OS/2 CIM when that came out,
but that didn't work well. Compuserve started switching fora to HMI-only, and
I was never able to post a message to an HMI-only forum, either with DOSCIM
or OS/2 CIM. I was "Timed out waiting for a response" followed by disconnect.
This continued for the better part of a year until I dropped Compuserve at the
end of August 1997, after they developed a bug in their mail system whereby I
couldn't send a message to an outside Internet address, but could send the
message if it was a reply. That bug was about two weeks old, and I dropped
Compuserve just in time to avoid being charged for another month.<<

I have posted messages using DOSCIM, but don't recall if they were to
HMI-only fora or not. I am not certain what "response" you were waiting for,
but I cannot recall ever being "timed out."

Sending a message to an outside internet address requires careful addressing
with Compuserve. For example, to send a message directly to you, I would have
to address it as:

      "Thomas Mueller" > INTERNET:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
      |^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^|^^^^^^^^|
         optional required No angle brackets(<>)

IIRC, if the optional real user name is included, there *must* be a space
between the name and the ">" and between the ">" and "INTERNET:"

"Replying to" would automatically put these in the address, which may be why
you were able to reply to off-service messages, but not send to them.

>>I guess you can use Arachne for WWW browsing even when you connect with
Compuserve. Can you get Compuserve mail using Arachne? Do they support POP3
and SMTP?<<

I have never tried getting mail from Compuserve using Arachne. With DOSCIM,
the mail will be downloaded in a Compuserve proprietary format, however, I
can send, get and read mail in text form using ProComm Plus. (It will be
interesting to try getting mail with Arachne sometime.) I like TAPCIS for
mail (which is all I use it for now) as it keeps all received mail in one
file, which can be set up to also have all "sent" messages saved in that
file also. (I archive the mail files twice a month, on the 15th and last
day, and zip them quarterly.) TAPCIS' search routine can search entire
messages for a word/phrase, or just the subject, originator, or recipient. I
have a version of Pegasus which I have been wanting to try out, but it seems
that only a crisis situation will get me moving in that direction (plus a
larger HD).

>>If Compuserve mailbox holds 100 messages maximum, could you join a free
e-mail service such as GMX, Telebot or Yahoo? Sometimes I get over 100
messages in one day on my bluegrass.net account.<<

Yes, I could join a "free" e-mail service, and *did* have an e-mail address
with Freewwweb before it went under. But, even with a "free" e-mail service,
I would still have to access it thru Compuserve or another ISP. TAPCIS could
not be used as that is set up to work only with Compuserve mail, or at least
that is what they say. With the experiences other Arachnians are having with
Insight, I am not ready to wholly rely on it right now.

While I don't do a whole lot of traveling, I like the idea that Compuserve
has toll-free telephone numbers just about everywhere. Otherwise, when I go
out of town, I would have to switch to "digest" versions of the listservices
that I subscribe to.
