Hello:
My son has a Pentium 133 with a semi-real modem. It works within
Windows 95, but it will not work within a "DOS box", nor will it
work in native DOS mode (attained by pressing F8 as soon as you
the message "Starting Windows 95").
If I am within Windows 95 I can select
START > SHUT DOWN > RESTART IN MS-DOS MODE. After the computer restarts
in "MS-DOS MODE" I can use the modem to dial and connect to the internet
and run such applications as Net-Tamer, Bobcat, and NetMail DOS 2.12.
This modem will work with DOS only after I have selected "RESTART in
MS-DOS MODE", but it will not work in a "DOS box", nor will in work
in native DOS mode as described above.
Why is that so?
I would like to be able to install and run Arachne on this system. The
problem is that I don't think I have enough DOS memory on this machine
when I restart in DOS mode. If I start in native DOS mode (F8) the
computer obeys CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, thereby providing me with
sufficient memory. The problem is that the modem won't work in this mode.
The modem will work if I select "restart in MS-DOS mode", but when the
computer is restarted in this mode it doesn't even obey CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT. Is there anything good I can do to correct this problem?
