Me too. I had KDE on my machine for 15 minutes before
deleting it, and had Gnome for about two days... long enough
to find out I don't like gmc.
Midnight Commander has to be the most useful utility I've
ever seen. It not only handles all kinds of file manipulations,
and search functions, but also lets you look inside zip files,
tarballs, and rpms, and will do just about everything GnoRPM
will do.
For Linux Arachne, you could just have an icon that calls up mc,
since every distribution includes it anyway.
