In case nothing the others have suggested works you can always try and load
the drivespace driver in config.sys. A friend of mine once had a problem
with lacking enough free memory (in 6.x, more than 7 years ago) and I
noticed that actually loading the driver would cause it to use less than
otherwise. The driver wasn't needed since he didn't use doublespace (the
name at the time IIRC) and I don't know how he finally fixed it.
