When you are using an IMAP server your messages are not downloaded to your
hard drive. That is what happens with POP3 protocol. With IMAP the messages
stay in an inbox on the server. You can see the headers listed on your
screen. You can select a message and view it on the screen, but the message
will remain on the server unless you mark it for deletion and then expunge it
from your inbox on the server. You may save the message to your hard drive
if you want to, but you might prefer to just leave it on the server. The
message will still be there for future reference unless you decide to expunge
it from the server. One very nice advantage of the IMAP protocol is that you
don't have to use any of the storage space on your own hard drive to archive
your messages. You can use the remote server as your archive area.

I have inquired in the Pine newsgroup if there is any serious thought being
given to further development of the DOS versions. I received several replies
from some folks who work with the Pine Development Team. Everybody says the
answer is simply no. Period.
