Hello Arachnids:
I remember well the congressional investigations and the scandals and
the public uproar over the shocking discovery back in the late 1950's
that some of the most popular radio disk jockeys were accepting bribes
to promote aspiring recording artists. The system of rewards and
kickbacks to the disk jockeys was popularly called "payola". The disk
jockeys could look forward to receiving some really nice payments simply
by playing somebody's song and saying that it is number one on the current
hit parade. Also they would be paid well for broadcasting some highly
flattering announcements about the coolest teenage idols of the day. Some
recording artists who really did have some of the most promising talent
could not hope to get promoted by the most popular disk jockeys because
the truly talented artists wouldn't come up with the payola. The highly
talented were so much more dedicated to their artistic expression than to
their self-corruption.
As we enter the twenty first century we are spending far less time
listening to songs on the radio and we are now satisfying many of our
entertainment needs by surfing the web. Nowadays we are finding web
browsers and websites taking top place in entertainment. Most of the
big-time webmasters probably can distinguish a good browser from a bad one
just as easily as a popular radio disk jockey can distinguish between a
truly talented aspiring recording artist and some jerk offering a bag full
of money to pour into his pockets.
Does anyone ever really wonder why so many of the big-time webmasters are
promoting some really inferior web browsers as being so much "better" than
others? Hmmm . . . .
Just wondering . . .
