As always on this list, the replies to my question about
"Sending mail with Arachne", have been great.

     First, for Clarence Verge:

     1. I have 80 to 90 mailing list FILEs. You asked if just
one of them, or all of them, during the last few weeks fail
when Arachne attempts to send mail To: @FILE

Your thinking is exactly the same as mine. I first thought
I had 1 corrupted FILE of mailing addresses. Therefore,
I have tried 20 to 30 out of the 80 or 90 FILEs. They all
     fail in the same manner.

     2. You asked if there could be a DOS error being generated.
I have experience that in the past, with a DOS error message
overwriting the Arachne page, in the upper left corner, with
a message such as "Bad file or command".

That is not happening, when Arachne refuses to send
     To: @FILE

     3. The error message is actually being reported, within
Arachne, at the bottom of the Arachne screen, on the
"progress reporting line" (if that is what the bottom line
     might be called.

The "progress reporting line" starts reporting that Arachne
has linked to the SMTP server with the following series of
statements on the "progress reporting line". Some of these
lines include (something else) because the statements change
so fast, just flashing for a second, that it is impossible
to fully read some of them:

Copyright (c) 1996-2000 Michael Polak, Arachne Labs

          processing form

          asking domain (and something else)

          connecting to SMTP (port 25)

          HELO (and something else)

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

     4. The "RCPT TO: <(null)>" repeats and repeats, very rapidly,
until I exit/crash Arachne. Otherwise, it would continue in
     that loop forever.

     5. I have followed your advice and copied over a fresh version
of ARACHNE.CFG (with no improvement). I am searching for a
fresh version of MIME.CFG to copy over, to see if that solves
     the problem.

     Second, to Sam Heywood:

     6. Do appreciate your information that some ISPs are limiting
the number of recipients of a single mailing, to help control
spam. I had never heard of this. Great idea. Anything to
prevent unwanted mail from clogging our mailboxes is great.

     7. However, each of my 80 to 90 mailing FILEs has a
maximum of 5 or 6 addressees. I suspect the effort to stop
spam might set a limit of a 100 or 1000 addressees. Nevertheless,
I will contact technical support, since I find your information
valuable. I totally endorse all effort to stop spam.

Thanks to all for your interest and help in chasing down my
     problem of TO: @FILE

It worked so well for 6 months that I am now spoiled, and want
     to get it working again.
