I went to Simtel last night and downloaded two files, haven't determined
whether they'll be useful (only a small percentage turn out useful), still
trying to recover the data on second fixed disk, which may have been badly
messed up by OS/2 automatically running its CHKDSK. I had no trouble, but I was
using DOS Lynx386 on the ftp, not the http. I had no inkling of Simtel having
fallen into AOL ownership.

I have received HTML quoted-printable email messages from AOLers using AOL 6,
and hear is it very tricky or impossible to send one-part plain-text messages
with AOL 6. One AOLer on a medicinal herbs emailing list had to go back to
AOL 5 because the list software automatically rejects HTML and quoted-printable,
anything other than one-part plain-text. So I think of AOL as messing things
up, also considering their service is accessible only through their proprietary
software, as opposed to general-purpose Internet access software.

If AOL kills Simtel Net, maybe one of the mirrors can take over as the main
site? www.cdrom.com and ftp.cdrom.com are Walnut Creek CDROM, which has been
taken over by BSDI and subsequently by Wind River (http://www.windriver.com).
Wind River is mainly BSD OS from what I hear, though they say they will retain
FreeBSD. Other Walnut Creek CDROM stuff may fall by the wayside. There is also
the site ftp.freesoftware.com, though hardly anything was accessible last time
I was there.
