Hello Arachnids:

I have a very disconcerting experience to report.

About 45 minutes ago I was online with Arachne. My online
activities alternated among downloading my email, surfing
the web, and composing email messages. As I was reviewing
a recently composed email message in my outbox, I heard a
dial tone from my modem. I knew instantly that this should
not have happened because I was not accessing any modem
program or function. In the lower right hand corner of my
Arachne I could see in green uppercase letters TCP/IP. This
indicated to me that I was still online even though I was
hearing a dial tone from my modem. Then my modem started to
dial, even though my Arachne indicated that I was still
online. Even if I had temporarily lost the connection for
some reason there is no program running on my computer that
would automatically cause the modem to redial. I don't know
what number my modem was dialing. No terminal screen
appeared. I became afraid that my modem might connect with
the Evil Empire and that control of my computer would suddenly
be passed over Darth Vader, or even to somebody worse, like
Bill Gates. I hit the panic button. That is the big
pushbutton on the front of my computer that says "POWER".
Pushed it in and it was OFF. Then I checked my phone and found
that I had a normal dialtone as expected. After re-booting I
ran Norton Disk Doctor. Everything OK. Then I ran F-PROT to
scan my memory and my entire hard drive. No viruses. I have
never had a problem like this before. I have an all DOS system
and my modem has always been very well-behaved. What happened?
Has anyone else on this list ever experienced a similar
problem? Any recommendations as to what I should do if this
should ever happen again?

Help!
