As possible as it might be, its still abit too much to presume...
I mean, think about it - He was using Arachne. No IRC client, ICQ
client, or anything else that will "expose the IP" to the public in a
special manner.
If he was attacked, the person have probebly either punched in
a random number, "dialed the wrong number" when trying to attack
someone else, or did a whole attack on a sub-net.
... My vote is that its probebly a bug in Arachne, or
a mistake he did. (like pressing ALT+D by mistake).
