Yes. Even without knowing that the original install was based on an
alien type experiment, I felt there must be some point to which I
could return and start that part over. 
It seems to me that the Xconfigurator SHOULD be that point - or else it
is incapable of doing its job. The only other point obvious to me was
square one.

Instead, I'll try the approach outlined by 2voyagers Steve and, to me,
that means I'll be doing what the configurator should have done. :)
