Sorry for "jumping the gun" in my first post.
I have Caldera OpenLinux v2.3 on this system.
(as you say... *that's* the one which requrires (not XF86_SVGA) but
rather XF86_VGA16)
IIRC,
You have no choice but to install it because it can't be "unchecked"
from the list of X-servers to be installed onto the HDD during the
initial install procedure.
