It's quite hard for us in our comfy existences to imagine how:
1:a) any one individual could feel so personally affronted by western society
that they would want to attack it as a whole, and
b) that this person could manage to motivate a group of supporters/groupies
to carry out the operation.
Reread that.
I don't mean that it's hard to imagine it could happen. That's easy.
I mean, it's hard to imagine that much hate.
2:a) any religious group/organization could REALLY believe there is such a
fundamental difference between themselves and the rest of the world
that they must demonstrate the rightness of their thoughts/ways.
b) that there are true supporters of such madness, willing to act against
humanity for their god.
Just because we've seen it happen before doesn't make it easier to imagine
today.
3: ) any people of a nation that is currently under sanction by western
society that actually believe, as individuals, that the west is the
source of their problems and not their own leader.
I can't imagine it to be so, but it really IS so. I have some personal
experience attesting to the fact - students from one of these countries
illogically defending one of the true nutcases.
What we have here is even MORE proof of a bug in our genetic programming.
Over and over we see individuals, groups, nations doing unbelievable things
to other human beings.
Even inside our comfy confines we have these atrocities taking place:
The assassinations of JFK, John Lennon, Martin Luther King. Kent State.
Jonestown. Heaven's Gate. People going postal. Timothy McVeigh.
Outside ? It has gone on forever. The gas chambers. The killing fields.
It's hard to imagine, but it must be an integral part of humankind.
We need help.
