For awhile I was subscribed to three or four very active mailing
lists besides this one and had five or six people who corresponded
with me privately--so it was not unusual for me to have over two
hundred messages to deal with daily.

Many I did not read, but I skimmed and deleted. Unless you are
very patient, that kind of volume on slow equipment with Arachne
is next to impossible.

The same slow equipment functioning as a terminal to log onto a
shell could just fly through the same volume of material.

Easy to use, too. With a shell account you don't have to set up
and configure Pine, just use it. Why? Because it's running on the
shell machine that you log onto and comes ready to use.

But, it is difficult to find an ISP that offers shell access anymore.

There are a number of free shell accounts available though and if
I was running a heavier email volume again I would start using one
again for sure.

Having a shell account is also a very good way to learn something
about Unix/Linux because you can get the lay of the land without
having to install Linux and be your own system administrator.
