I am told that about 30 years ago there used to live in my neck of
the woods a few very recluse mountain families which would speak a
corrupted Dutch dialect known as "Home Dutch". They are the
descendants of some early Dutch settlers who flocked to the region
in the 1700s. These families never started trying to learn English
until they started sending their children to public school just a
few decades ago. As the parents started taking their children down
to the schools for enrollment the teachers were absolutely astonished
to learn that there were several very large families which had been
living in the nearby mountains for more than two centuries and they
had never before tried to learn English. In several areas of
Virginia there are many children who do not receive any schooling
except at home. The law does not require parents to send their
children to any school. Neither does the law require a parent to
meet any educational qualifications for teaching their children at
home.
