Greetings Arachne Mailing list. I am a new member here, been watching
for about a week I guess. I see much Linux discussion here, not much
about Arachne, though I take it that Arachne development is stopped for
a while?

I have a 486DX2/50 laptop here, 12Mb RAM and I think Win 3.11 which I
dont use, I have tried most of the DOS internet programs about I think,
Arachne is the best although it has some shortcomings that I do not
like, and since I hate DOS I guess I will think about some unix - I
was wondering about Linux (especially since Arachne runs on Linux, I
would like a web browser after all) though in my heart I am with BSD.
I ran NetBSD for a few years (had no computer for the last 3 years
though). My internet link is very slow (mobile phone, 14400bps) so I
am looking for an external CD-ROM drive (v.cheap)

anyway, this linux discussion - please remember people, that Linux
describes only the kernel - the rest of the system, including the shell
that you see when you log in, is the userland and might vary from
distribution to distribution. RedHat is a completely different system
than
Slackware or whatever, though it might come with many of the same
components. When you say 'the linux scripting language' (sorry, I
forget who it was) you actually mean 'the bash scripting language' I
suspect, and dont forget that there are others available - perl is
probably more suited to creating useful scripts than bash for example,
though you might have to install it.

BasicLinux is quite cute, and
I had a go.. the person who wanted to not run pppsetup, just look for
the file called pppsetup and see what it does. I think it was in
/usr/sbin (wrong place I think? sbin is usually for statically linked
binaries, that can be used safely without the libraries loaded - I
believe that would be useful in singleuser mode) anyway
its just a script file. and at the beginning are the magic commands
of insmod which load in cslip and ppp. you probably dont need cslip
though I could be wrong, and you can likely add the insmod command to
the end of your /etc/rc.d/rc. whatever file, or your /root/.login
file or even to some kind of funky test-and-set in the ppp-on script.
unix is much more friendly with man pages I should say..

well, back to Arachne..

I have two pop mailboxes, is it possible to
make a 'script' somehow to download them both from one button? I did
have a program called tcpmail that runs in DOS (very excellent, look at
the Barebones DOS email page for that) and
tried to put it in a script, to send and receive all my mail at once,
but the output of the script file I could not get into the screen of
arachne. any clues?

the F3 key, differentiates between online and offline.. I think this is
a hardwired internal thing? I was wondering why Insight did not also
have a thing, where if you were online, the save to outbox button would
send it right away (insight is not that configurable maybe?)

the wwwman included with arachne 1.70 rev 3 is not able to make an index
of the cache for browsing the cache.

some apm I tried to install from the arachne.cz web site were maybe
earlier versions of the programs that are included with Arachne (the
wwwman I think was like this but were still installed. Good to have
version numbers listed before we download). Others refused to work
at all (different internal editor for instance, instructions did not
relate to the real world as I see it)

I think enough for today..

iain
