I was looking for exactly that - and now I'm on Linux! Don't forget
that Linux comes in all sorts of grades, from 'idiot-proof' (not that
you'd need that) right up the scale to 'engine-drivers only', with
everything inbetween. There are all the lightweight ones, like Steven's
Basiclinux, Tomsrtbt, etc. I've even got Linux running my old
parallel-port scanner, which they said it wouldn't do. Also digital
camera & colour printer, both via USB; CD-RW, etc.

Quite right. So there are some smaller browsers. I hate to recommend
Opera but it's CLAIMED to be faster than NS. Then there's Dillo and all
that sort. Also Galeon, and the various ones that come with that dreadful
KDE thing! If you want an entire herd of dancing elephants, there's
Mozilla, of course....

Yes, rebooting is extremely frustrating. So use DOSEMU. It seems to
work well and is constantly being refined. Mine's V1.0.2-1. Runs
Wordstar, oldish orcad, Xtree, Pictview.... I haven't cracked port usage
yet, but no doubt there's a way.

And, believe it or not, the largest part of the help that I got in
getting Linux to run in the early days came from here - our very own
Arachne list. Thanks, chaps!

   Just my 2p's worth, obviously!

      Gerald.
