Hi, in the past I used to have this problem with gdm (now I use kdm) and I 
have seen it too in entrance (enlightenment display manager), when any of 
those was the problem, I just had to login with the arch-base cd, archie or 
knoppix and remove that daeom from rc.conf.

Hope it's nothing hardware related.
