By the way, I asked this in my previous message:

Did you check that out and/or see anything like I described?

Sorry about forgetting to do that.  I think that for the test to be effective one has to do a fresh boot with the optical mouse connected, launch X, wiggle the mouse a bit, terminate X, and then examine the contents of the kernel ring buffer.  So, what happend is I put it off to do a fresh boot and then forgot.

Anyway, upon conducting the test, there was one interesting entry in the kernel ring buffer messages.  It was this:

psmouse.c: Exploer Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing away 3 bytes.

I suspect that that has something to do with the problem, although I have no idea what.  If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.  Thanks.
