Your problem sounds like bad protocol or wrong number
of buttons, or an undead mouse. How about testing it
with a live CD, e.g. puppy or dsl ??
Good suggestion. I shut the machine down, connected the optical mouse, and booted from a Knoppix CD. My optical mouse worked just fine.
I'll once again review the option settings to see if I can come up with anything.
