I am finding complete success with only the following in my .xinitrc.
This is for scim-anthy, with Japanese. Thanks to Damir's hard work, my
ArchLinux section on my Japanese page about installing is only a few
lines--a quick pacman -Sy anthy scim scim-anthy and it Just Works(TM)
(GREAT job Damir).

export LC_CTYPE en_US.UTF-8
export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
scim -d

With just that, fluxbox and mlterm I can use Japanese in firefox,
openoffice and an xterm--an mlterm.

BTW, for those with an interest in mlterm, my buddy Josh has a nice
little guide.

Buffy: I didn't say that I'd never slay another vampire. It's not
like I have all these fluffy bunny feelings for them, I'm just
not gonna get way extracurricular with it.
