Hi Johanes. I was looking in this page http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Intel&card=ICH+southbridge+AC97+audio.&chip=440MX%2C+i810%2C+i810E%2C+i820%2C+ICH4%2C+ICH5%2C+ICH6&module=intel8x0 It is the details page for the intel8x0 module. The last comment reminded me of a little detail I had forgot... the spdif columns in the alsamixer. They must be muted or else they will realy mess the sound. I had solved this long ago and had forgoten... Maybe you have just unmuted all the chanels, as I did in the first place, causing spdif to be enabled. Look for IEC958 in the chanel labels.
