Well Joel, I would like to add the following If you see even Bose, many people felt that it has wide variety. But frankly I don't think so. If you see songs Desh Ki Mitti, Ghoomparani, Ekla Chalo and Azaadi all have the same skeleton tune it is just the orchestration and other masala added to it which makes it feel different. In fact if you carefully look at the Chorus of the Azaadi song (also the whole song) it is nothing but our National Anthem (Jana Gana Mana....) repackaged as it is the different tune.
Afghanisthan theme in Bose also looks very shabby to me because in those times much better feel was given in tamil movies like Guleba Kavali & Alibaba by MSV & RM. See those movies to experience. In fact I won't be surprised if he has used some of the notes just like that. The Same is the case in other movies also Lagaan - Mitwa, Ore Chori... are both same skeleton tunes Swades - Sawariyan is IR's tune (also used by other copy cat Nadeem Shravan in Raja Hindustani i.e Pardesi Pardesi...) Zubeidaa - Dheere Dheere..., Hain Na..., Door Kahi... all have same skeleton tune I agree that music directors will use their popular tunes in many movies, but I don't see people using that in the same movie. This shows the creativity of that person. As you say his music was once upon a time very refreshing and a welcome change. I think this magic started to weaken after Kandukonden Kandukonden. That is the last album which had masterpieces with each song having different shades and different feel like 1. Enna Solla - Most in raga Bhairavi 2. Kanna Moochi - In Senchurutti 3. Title Song - In Kadana Kutoohalam 4. Enge Enadhu - In Ragamalika (Sindhu Bhairvai in Starting) 5. Konjum Mainakkale - In Madhyamavathi (although not pure). See how wide variety these songs were. Now he is becoming montonous and the variety is dying down.
