In March, 2005, we upgraded from ARS 4.5.2 (running on Oracle 8i, on
Solaris 5.6) to ARS 6.0.1 - to a different server, running Oracle 9i on
Solaris 5.9. We did it the same way - DEFs, then .ARX exports for data.
We have a few large tables as well - one had 1.3 million records at the
time (before archive was available), a few were in the 40-80K record range.
You don't have workflow involved, do you?
Import Forms and Menus only from your DEF export. Then individually import
data from your .ARX exports. When done, import Active Links, Filters,
Escalations, and all remaining objects. This worked fine for us.
Alternately, you could import workflow with forms, but you'll probably want
to disable it until after your data imports (anything whose Execute On
includes Merge, anyway). For recovery or server porting purposes, workflow
ordinarily isn't necessary; it's processing would exacerbate performance,
which could result in database timeout errors.
You didn't specify which underlying database you're using. If Oracle, and
the versions are the same on your source and target servers, you may be
able to use RMAN to backup then restore. We occasionally wrestle with it
(limited Oracle expertise here). If ARS was properly installed and
configured on the target server, RMAN can move the Oracle database
(tablespace(s) and their tables).
I presume you've reviewed the changes for ARS 6.x. Active Links that do
Set Fields, whose Execute On is Window Open don't work. Need to change
them to Window Loaded. Table Fields have more options to control what
happens on row select - may or may not present issues. Alters server
changed to Notifier. E-mail engine has changed (new, client-accessible
forms to manage inboxes, outboxes). And so on.

Greetings List!
We are currently working on upgrading our Remedy from 4.5 to 6 (woo hoo!)
and have new servers, databases, etc. that we will be using.
In the past when we've migrated/moved our Remedy, we have moved the data by
exporting it through the User Client (our largest form was only 45k
entries,
followed by a 25k entry form). Today however, we have at least a dozen
forms
with 60k+ (several with 200k+) and are encountering timeouts and other
performance issues when trying to export the data to be moved. The last
time
we tried moving the data from one DB to the new DB, it all but blew up.
We are wondering if anyone else has had to move (what we consider) large
amounts of data and knows of a more efficient way to do this.
Thank you VERY much in advance for your assistance!
