I've been running the v7 client against 5.1.1 and 6.3 servers (with ITSM4 and ITSM6 apps respectively). Haven't had any major issues with it.
have to admit that I was surprised at the size of the installer - Derek, thanks for the headsup on the Crystal info.
One thing that I do not like on the v7 client though is the sign on dialog - it is just way too big and clunky. Just looks "wrong". Definitely prefer the look of the v6 signon screen. But thats just nit-picking.
And of course if you are a big user of the mid-tier, the clients footprint doesn't really matter. In fact, the fact that the mid-tier works so well on our 6.3 system, it'll make the application roll-out considerably easier.
