Check the enviroment settings for the user your account your running as it may be pointing you to the wrong libraries the quick clients main purpose is to give connectivity when you dont have any other oracle clients installed.

Thanks for the quick reply. I pasted a copy of tnsnames.ora in the
new 10g \Network\Admin folder, but am still getting the same error.
tnsping shows the correct use of sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora, so that
looks good.

Not sure what to try next.
