This does not help with the original question...

The compression is done within the ARAPI on the client side before it is
sent to the server using ARCreateEntry/ARSetEntry/ARMergeEntry.

Retrieval of attachments are done using the ARGetEntryBLOB call. It is
uncompressed at the client side before the buffer is handed over to the
calling function.

This all makes sence and conserves network bandwidth as well as server
processing time.

I had to investigate this when implementing the write-verify-functionality
within the RRR|Chive tool.
