I had a similiar issue although it wasn't quite as bad as yours and I found two things that helped to clear up the problem. One, like Axton, I had a lot of bouncebacks and bad email addresses. Cleaning up the bad email address help to lessen the frequency of the problem. Patching is what ultimately fixed the mail issue for me.
