James,

The method remedy uses to detect the Suse or Redhat is to check for the
release notes file.
Try to use the command
    rpm -f  [FileName]
to find which package provides the release file and then install that
package.

You can also hack the ar_install script and make it install that's what I
always do, in the end it works fine.

For the LD_LIBRARY_PATH this is needed only after the install is done not
before.
