Extending your server footprint in other directions (if you require web
reporting), you might need one lower powered server to host a mid-tier and
Crystal Reports or BOXI Server. I like to put the reporting mid-tier entirely
on Tomcat, and run Crystal on IIS with .NET rather than java, and put a SQL
Server Std instance locally to host the Crystal Reports db (otherwise Crystal
Reports Server or BOXI will install its own unmanaged db, which can be a
security problem). All of your mid-tier servers can then refer to one Crystal
server for report display via its local mid-tier address.

Another less powerful support server is shared by Remedy Knowledge Management
(which has a number of requirements like SearchServer, SQL Server, and yet
another Tomcat instance) and the Atrium Integration Engine. RKM does not fit
well on a mid-tier server, and AIE shouldn't be on the AR Server, especially if
the AR Server is going to have to run the Reconciliation engine (and eventually
Normalization, too). Spreading things out also isolates each application from
the effects of patching or upgrading a different component that shares the same
resources (especially java).

Both of these servers are old HP DL 380s with two (2) 3.06 ghz Xeons and only
3gb of RAM running 32-bit Windows Server 2003 Enterprise.

It will be interesting to see if this hardware remains satisfactory underneath
all of the 7.5 components.

It's difficult to give recommendations for custom apps, so I guess you should
go with recommendations provided for the ITSM 7 apps. Chris Strauss sent his
configuration to the list, so you may as well use that....

If you plan to sue the mid-tier, plan to have separate servers (at least two,
potentially three servers) each housing a mid-tier, and a load balancer between
the mid-tiers and the app servers and also between the users and the mid-tiers.

Guillaume,

We are only replacing application servers at this time. We are also going to
start using Mid-Tier. The current configuration is not worth even mentioning as
it was just equipment we had laying around. There is one active server with a
Hot Backup. There are five custom applications on this server and nothing out
of the box. We have a separate reporting and database servers.

Thanks for your input. Oh, by the way money is an object in this case.

Hey Roger,

Would you mind sending to the list your current servers' configuration
(processor speed, memory, etc).
Is your database server separate from the apps server?
Are you using the mid-tier?
Do you have ITSM or custom apps or both?
Are you using the CMDB, and if so are your running reconciliation jobs?
Do you have a separate reporting server?

Okay, I am not trying to start a debate. I am only looking for some
information. We need to replace my production environment. We are currently in
a Windows environment on XP. We have 7k+ users but concurrent connections are
750 max. We are going to stay in windows and go to a Server Group. I am just
looking for recommendations for processor speed, memory, number of processors,
etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
