Joe

I'm sure I installed as default, but I have made changes since then to try and
get this to ^%$%$ installer to work!

In the SQL Server Config Manager which section should I be looking in/ setting
this up?
I have done both, though not sure if correctly.

SQL Server Network Config- protocols for ARS75

Which one do I configure, IP1, IP2, ??? IP6??

SQL Native Client 10 config-Native Protocols?

If I could have someones settings thatwork that would help immensely!

I wish I could do a screen capture to let you see where you can see that.. But
I am not in front of a ready MS-SQL install..

Did you specify a port while installing SQL? If not it should be 1433.

Try installing your patch by using that port..

I see no port number listed, only protocol as tcpip.

  Kevin,

The port will be in the properties settings of the server in the SQL Server
Management Studio. The default SQL Server port is 1433. 1521 is the default
Oracle port..

So unless while installing MS-SQL server if you changed the default port of
the SQL server to 1521, you should be using 1433.

FYI, these are default database client ports for various databases..

  MS-SQL - 1433
  Oracle: 1521
  DB2 - 50000
  Sybase - 4100
  Informix - 1526
  Datadirect Sequelink Server - 19996

  Hope this helps..

  Joe

    ** What client?

I can connect to SQL Server Management Studio with either Windows Auth or
SQL Server Auth.
It does not request or specify a port.

I am using windows firewall and even tried opening that specific port, no
avail.

Are you using port 1521 to connect the SQL client to the database? Is the
firewall blocking it?

** This is getting very annoying...very.

I finally decided to try the easier option, MSSQL 2008.
I also upgraded my laptop to Windows 7.
      That all went fine.

Then installed MSSQL, set all pre install tasks as per the
Install-750.pdf - ARSystem database, ARAdmin user, roles, specified TCP port
1521

I have tried running installer under both Windows Auth and SQL Sever
Auth, both give following error and I am unable to proceed.

"TCP connection to the host acer using port number 1521 failed, possible
causes
      Database services are not running/available
Net config not configured correctly for TCPIP protocol
IP or host name/port number is not correct"

I can connect to SQL Server Management Studio with either Windows Auth or
SQL Server Auth.
So why is installer saying it can't connect to d/b instance??

Help, I'll have no more hair shortly or worse - give up!
