I've never done what you are attempting. Is it a Windows box? If so I don't know is its doable do to where dll's get stored. On Ux I assume it's possible just give it a different install path. You'll probable need a separate Oracle instance too.
As for our experience in upgrade from 7.5 to 7.6 - it was very painfull.
