You can do it with two fields and two Active Links (actually 3 because you
need one to clear the field).  The field where you want to store the data is
Read Only and does not have the menu attached.  The second field is set to
Display as Text with no label and has the menu attached.  You place the
second field just to the right of the first field so it all looks like one
field.

One more thing you may want to do its set the first field (data field) to
Read/Write when the form is in a Search mode.
