The fact that an overlay exists should not be an issue, after all that's the whole point of them in the first place! It's hard to provide any specific advice without some more information to understand what the actual cause of the failure was. The one bit of the log you have posted suggests a problem due to a naming conflict but you really need to look in to the other logs to see exactly what the problem was.
Regarding what to install against, I'd roll it back so that you know you're starting from a working system.
