I have been using the client for quite some time against an 8.1 server (still not moved to Prod) and it works well. The issue you may come across is a Windows 7 (64 Bit) issue, but I'm told that people that have that issue are good with marking it to run in XP Compatability mode. You of course will be limited to 7.6.04 client features, but 8.1 server features would be available.
