This exact same thing is happening to me. I recently upgraded to Artifactory 4.2.0 and I could not fix this issue. It does not keep the session, it logs you in, but the minute you try to do something in the site, it says you are not logged in. If you type an invalid password, it does say that it is invalid. In the log file, it says that the login is accepted. And Crowd auth test works from the Admin / Security / Crowd menu.
Very strange. I even replicated the install in a different server and it works there.
