There are many factors that contribute to the problems of violence and poverty.
But I believe the solution lies in actually stopping the generational cycle
and shifting the mentality of hopelessness toward one of possibility. That
really means reaching the kids who are coming up and showing them that there is
an alternative to a life of gangs, teen pregnancy, and welfare.

Though clearly home and school will be the first place to reach these kids and
educate them on the potential of their lives, sometimes it just doesn't happen
there. There is the local boys & girls club on Monroe. They seem to do good
work, offering young people a safe haven and programs that can help them in
areas of education, self-esteem, life skills and personal growth. You can
volunteer there or donate money.

I agree that AP can never be a great city (or for that matter a desirable one)
while violence and poverty are so prevalent.
