This (a python-QT gui, preferably not mac specific) is (has always been)
an interesting idea. Is QT is now in fact truly open-source? Historically,
there's
been waffling on that issue; has it been resolved?
The important questions before your (or any new gui) is started are:
- by whom/how is it going to be extended/maintained after you leave?
Or do you have support to stay on after on a volunteer basis? GSOC is
basically a 2 month project and it's pretty tough to create a solid GUI
for a system with as many features as ascend in 2 months.
- Do you want to target a subset of ascend functionality for a specific
application
area? If so, what area and how should the new gui be tied to the other
modeling tools in that application area?
- What gui have you written before?
and finally, do
we have any other active mac users who would be willing to test your gui
during development and provide feedback?

Subject: [Ascend-sim-users] Aspiring GSoC student
Hello!
I'm a 1st year student and I have some experience with Python.
I'd like to pick up the task of building an ASCEND GUI for Mac OS X. My initial
plan would be to make it with Qt, since I use a mac and Qt apps look and behave
quite natively. If that is not ideal, I would use Cocoa with PyObjC.
Would this be acceptable? Any suggestions, advice?
Where do I go from here?
