Well, actually you *are* obligated, since they have to be within 2
characters to be recognised.

Now the non-monospaced fonts argument is the first one that actually makes
sense, yes it would be virtually impossible.  For me I am usually
documenting code, so my editor is usually set to mono anyway (have you ever
tried to do code indenting with non-mono fonts :)  and I only speak ASCII
so I don't have problems with wide characters.

Yep agree, its easier since most editors can easily be made to globally add
or subtract one from the numbers of ===

Still, while your arguments make sense, I'll stick to what I am used to and
you can use what you like, thats the nice thing about flexibility :)
