For a Kamrupi like me mistakes on Ahom history is common :-') But, I would be reluctant to say "hog-wash" while Manoj Das talks about their/his past, because he is a good Ahom nationals and I think he was knowledgeable on history - he appreciated me telling, "Nice that you want to know about our past." http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4320 <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4320>
For English medium Ahom nationals they have no choice but "Gaits" :) Lets implement Rajen Barua Rule (RBR) of /x/ or /h/ sound I think I end up getting something: 'Songoi-' or 'songoti' --> 'Xongoi-' or 'xongoti' 'Songoi-' or 'songoti' --> 'Hongoi-' or 'hongoti' Now 'Hongoi-' --> 'Gongoi-' --> 'Go-goi-' (n = 5th consonant at low intensity or silence). Like "ganyaa" (crowd/socity) now Ahom nationals pronounce as "goya" i.e., 5th consonent missing or silent. "Not all Ahoms are from the royal clan" - absolutely right all Ahom nationals cannot be royal clan, there got to be some citizens as well. I think it is a hype calling Rabin a intellectual :) But Ahom nationals are broadly in two categories i.e., (a) Dravidian Ahom Nationals and (b) Mongoloid Ahom Nationals. Thai-Ahom is probably a made-up tale because immigration was never a one time phenomenon but a repeat phenomenon. So why would people from Thailand make a one-time journey? (one time immigration is a violation of natural/fundamental immigration) Probably "khundlung/khunlaa" tale is better than Thai-immigration tale! Some cleaver local Mongoloid Ahom nationals probably went to Patkai Hills for picnic, then one of Indra's deputy fought them but he lost so Indra had to came down to Patkai Hills. Indra accepted a deal that none of his deputies would bother again if Shukaa Phaai would be made the King. Then picnic party went back to villages and told they got King. -- This is a fitting tale. We also see that some Ahom nationals now want to call them Tribe. I think it is "real picture". Why they think so could be gene-driven so I say "real picture". They think they are tribe because their great gran were tribes not Thai immigrants. rabin --- "prachengh" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: What hog-wash! Songoi to Gogoi makes no sense. Its like that P.N. Oak guy seeing Gandhi in George. Try the Tai word Ukoi to Gogoi for size. Not all Ahoms are from the royal clan. Last time I checked there are more than four royal Ahom clans. And Phukan means a special (paik) officer, could be a bamun or kalita. Paik system is a bit different from the Hindu labor system. Mostly (not always) skilled based not hereditary. Manoj and Rabin, if you are really interested in history there are original written records that I am sure intellectuals such as yourself could read for themselves. No need to go through interpreter Gaits. And yes, you can learn about Buragohain also there (though they have a different Tai name). -Pracheng Hazarika see rest http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4361 <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4361>
