The Assembler Services References seems pretty clear that R15 does indeed contain a return code after a GATMAIN RU. It can be 0 or (if CHECKZERO=YES was specified) 20. It also states: "When the GETMAIN macro returns control to your program and you specified a conditional request, GPR 15 contains one of the following hexadecimal return codes:" which implies that R15 is not set for unconditional requests.
