Hello list,

This isn't strictly ASSP related, but I can't think of a better group of
people to help me understand this problem, so here goes:

Imagine that my email domain is my.com.

ASSP logs are telling me that I am reciving mail for users that do not
(indeed could never) exist eg: [EMAIL PROTECTED] It appears that the sender is
trying an infinite monkeys approach to hit valid email addresses. Tracing
the IP's of the senders reveals that the vast majority of them are from
China.

What possible benefit could this be to the spammer? The chances of landing a
correct address is akin to winning the lotto. And even if I employed no
anti-spam, my mail server would simply reject the mail.

I understand that it may be an attack, trying to flood my mail server, but
surely a dos attack on my mail servers external IP would be a better tactic?

Processing power is cheap but I fail to understand what the sender is trying
to achieve, are they on piece work?

Regards - Chris
