IMO, it can be argued that there is only one "official" version of dig for
Windows - that which forms part of BIND 9 from
http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/bind/bind9.php. The link to pigtail is the
same version. Thus, one doesn't need to worry too much about supporting
multiple versions.

As an aside, I looked long and hard for a "real" Windows version of whois. I
found nothing that actually worked as expected - lots of half-implemented
versions, but nothing that could execute all the commands in exactly the
same way. Thanks, I'll try the pigtail version. I've been running BIND on my
Windows servers since around 1996 - starting with BIND 4 on a '486 running
NT4, and currently run the BIND version of dig on my laptop, BTW.

The point about dealing with "external" packages / executables is a valid
one. However, when one considers that as it is, one has to install several
(Perl) packages that don't come with the standard ActiveState distribution,
this is perhaps less of an issue.

It seems to me that if Net::DNS::Resolver doesn't work, then we have four
choices: -

1 Wait for someone to fix it
2 Fix it ourselves
3 Use an alternative
4 Live without the functionality it provides

Fritz is proposing alternative (3), which seems reasonable in the
circumstances. If an ASSP user doesn't install dig, he doesn't get the
functions that it provides. If we don't use dig, no one gets the
functionality. If the functionality is valuable, the choice is obvious.
