Based on my observations from watching my ASSP and my Exchange server 
under load I would say no.
For each connection to ASSP a connection is created from ASSP to the MTA 
behind it.
When the connecting server disconnects ASSP also disconnects the 
connection to the MTA.

I've watched my w32 ASSP server while TCPView was running during the 
middle of the day and it was creating and closing connections just as 
fast as it was getting them.

I have a hunch as to what might have caused your issue but I would need 
more info before I could be sure.

If you can give me more info as to the circumstances that caused your 
issue I would definitely look into it.
Number of recepeints, CC or BCC involved etc...
