there's no need to "archive" those directories and btw you
shouldn't delete them; ASSP takes care of overwriting older
files as needed and the resulting "base" is used to generate
the spamdb, so leave those files/folders alone and let ASSP
handle them; just ensure to run the rebuildspamdb at least
once a day so that you'll always have a "current" spamdb

Are you sure the above isn't caused by "greylisting" (delaying) ?
If your clients are spread around on the internet, you should setup
things so that, to send emails they will need to authenticate with
the mailserver (through ASSP); in such a case a good idea would
be using the "second listen port" for authenticated connections
set up the port to 587 (smtp-submit) and have your clients setup
their mail programs to use authenticated SMTP toward this port
the above will also help sending email through "filtering ISPs" :)
