Why not try 1.2.6, it's the last stable by the former author iirc. It 
shouldn't provide you with any problems regarding the config files and such.

I am not an expert in tracking such issues but it looks to me like perl 
itself might be the problem. Perhaps it became corrupted or some perl 
module. Have you tried re-installing perl? Of course to eliminate it's 
the spamdb you could move it out of the way temporarily and run ASSP 
with a new empty spamdb.

It makes sense that replacing the ASSP perl scripts did not solve it.
