It's fine to set it lower but it won't affect anything directly, unless 
you actually had more than 200 sessions going on.

I wasn't expecting that would fix it. It was just a good idea to upgrade 
while you're at it.

I don't see a need to upgrade even further. As I believe the problem 
lies with perl, or one of its files being corrupted. But that's just 
somewhat of a guess, judging from what you said that it was running fine 
for years. And looking at the logs.

I can't tell you how to re-install perl on OSX, since I don't know how 
it was installed to begin with. Was it from a source tarball, some 
binary distirbution, something Apple specific?
