Thank you for helping me think through this problem. After reading another
recent thread about assp freezes, I decided to try disabling spotlight as
suggested for that problem. I can't say it fixes the problem for sure, but
my assp has been running smoothly for the last 24 hours, whereas it was
crashing perl every hour or two previously. I am hopeful that this is a
fix.
Indeed, as suggested by others, I will upgrade to a newer perl and assp
after a few other business priorities are taken care of. Until then, will
stay with assp 1.2.6 and perl 5.8.6.
